The Centre has made a successful bid to the Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities for funding for a PhD to start this October, and is now in the process of recruiting. The deadline is close (31 July), with interviews scheduled for 18 August.
The studentship is under the Creative Economies scheme, so the student will be working with an industry partner (Biome Collective) as well as Nicole Devarenne, University of Dundee and Iain Donald at the University of Abertay. The focus is on Africa and adaptations in transmedia (comics, film, games, etc) of adventure narratives (eg: Heart of Darkness, King Solomon’s Mines). The student will explore existing adaptations in transmedia whilst also looking at possibilities for new adaptations of other fictional or non-fictional texts (eg: Mary Slessor’s letters, Mary Kingsley’s memoirs), using local archives, and with the help of our industry partner. (Biome is a transmedia studio and co-working space for the creation of games, immersive environments, digital art and technology).
We are looking for someone with a background in literary study and/or visual culture studies, with creative interests and excellent communication skills. The AHRC expects that the student will have, or be studying towards, a Master’s degree.
